Five Favourites ~ October 2009

Finally, Beauty Thesis is back on track. I figured a good way to get back into the swing of things, would be to share my Top 5 from October.

Five Favourites / October 2009

Five Favourites / October 2009

L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara / Carbon Black
I’ve heard people talk about Carbon Black for a long time, but I just never got around to it. It was sitting patiently in my mascara box until I finally picked it up about a month ago. I’ve been using it pretty much every time I do my make-up, as I really like the intensity of the black as well as the final finish.

L’Oréal introduces Voluminous® Carbon Black Mascara, for bold and beautiful lashes, with dramatic volume. It’s a shade that’s blacker than black! Uniquely formulated to build lashes to five times their natural thickness for a full and dramatic lash look. Patented Volume-Maximizing Brush thickens lashes evenly and smoothly, leaving them soft with virtually no flakes, smudges, or clumps. Safe for sensitive eyes. (from lorealparis.ca) prices vary by location

MAC Studio Fix / NC42
Powder foundations have always been something that I have tended to stay away from. Past experienced showed that it tended to leave me looking cakey without enough coverage. I bought Studio Fix quite some time ago, but I never reached for it very much. Until the day came that I didn’t have enough time to work with my usual liquid foundation. Interestingly enough, it worked out pretty well. It’s great for a quick, fresh look.

A one-step application of foundation and powder. Gives skin a smooth, flawless, all-matte, full-coverage finish. Long-wearing: lasts for up to eight hours. A real all-in-one. The choice of pros, and a long time favourite of M·A·C fans. (from maccosmetics.ca) $31 CAD

MAC Cremestick Pearl Liner / Deep Soul
It’s no secret that I love the Creamstick Pearl Liners. They’re my favourite lip liner because they’re so creamy, which makes them a breeze to blend and they last on my lips. Deep Soul was a colour I haven’t used much, until recently. I discovered that it’s the perfect colour for a neutral or brown/bronze looking lip.

A creamy, highly pigmented, retractable lip liner. Lightweight and smooth to apply: very long-lasting. Use as outline or as a “fill.” Helps prevent feathering and bleeding. (from maccosmetics.ca) $17.50 CAD

Sephora Matte Blotting Films / 50 sheets
This past August I was out shopping with one of my good friends, and I noticed she pulled a package of blot papers out of her bag. Until then I’d been using blot powder to manage shine, but I was intrigued and tried one. It was marvellous. I love that you can reduce shine without wiping anything off or adding anything additional. These are a staple in my makeup bag, and I’ll even use one before I put on foundation if I’m going for a very matte look.

Excess oil and shininess on the nose, forehead or cheeks got you down? Sephora to the rescue. Made from a unique, absorbent, microporus film, our soft, blotting sheets instantly whisk away shine without disturbing makeup. The finish is fresh and matte – never dry. (from sephora.com) $13 CAD

Too Faced Shadow Insurance
This little gem came as part of a kit with an eye shadow palette. I’ve used other primers, and this one admittedly only came into rotation because I ran out of the other. However, it work quite well. I’ve never had any problems with my shadow creasing when I use it, and other colour bases get along well with it too.

Your full-coverage insurance policy against all fading creasing melting blurring oil-slicked and hard-to-blend eye shadow accidents. Our silicone-based eyeshadow primer transforms any eye shadow into a perfectly blendable color-drenched intensified version of itself then locks it down perfectly until you take it off. Our skin soothing formula evens out the skin tone on your lids and smoothes out lines while it secures a barrier between the oils of your skin and your makeup so no shadow catastrophes will ever happen again. (from toofaced.com) $17 USD
