First Experience With Hana Professional

Yesterday evening I decided to break in the flat iron that I received from Misikko.  This is just my first experience with the product, and I will do a full review after I’ve used it a few more times.

I figured that since my hair was already product rich, it was pointless to wash it again and re-apply all that product, just for the purposes of straightening it.  Honestly, I have no idea if that would have made a difference or not.. but it just seemed like a lot less of a hassle, so that’s what I went with.

The temperature I set the flat iron to was about 375, since I was in no hurry to max out the heat.  Then I just went through my hair in small sections, after gently brushing through the curls.  I haven’t done a ‘dry brush’ in forever and I definitely don’t recommend it.  I guess that’s why most people will use a brush with a blow dryer to prep their hair for the flat ironing process.  Lesson learned.

There were two big surprises; first was the length and thickness of my hair when it’s straight, the second being how well the lower heat did in straightening my curls.  It did a decent job, definitely nothing amazing but I have to keep in mind that I’m not very good with styling tools.  This is also why I’m going to try more than a single run (with different preperations) before I give my final review on it.

After this first experience I still think I look strange with straight hair.  It’s also made me think back on how I viewed my hair as a child.  When I was younger I wanted straight hair, but now that I’m on my natural hair journey I feel that what I really wanted was the movement and swing.  To my mind at the time the natural association was with straight hair, rather than thinking that my texture would be able to achieve those two things.  It seems a bit ironic that I have both with my natural curls, but with this heat straightened hair it seems stiff and doesn’t have the movement I’m used to.

Funny how that works out.  Just some hair food for thought. ;]

  1. No pics? I’m always on the hunt for the next great flat iron, so I really wanted to see the results.

    • There will be photos included in the actual review, this was more of a ramble.. LOL. Or, if you’re really eager, check back in a few hours and you’ll see experiment 1.5 on today’s FotD (which I’m just working on now).

      Thanks for dropping by. :]

  2. I love how you speak of your childhood desire for straight hair; I absolutely relate. Recently, I flat ironed my hair after cutting it into a bob. Wow, sometimes it is so obvious that we are given the perfect hair for our face. My nose overpowered my whole look and the straight hair was so blah that I might as well have been bald. I think I’m going to take a tip from you here and try to find a way to embrace my thick, coarse, wavy mane:)

    • Thank you. :]

While it may seem tedious at times, hair care becomes remarkably simple when you can just embrace your hair type and work with it, instead of against it. Good luck! :]
